The philosophers of antiquity gather under a great coffered vault: Plato, pointing upward, and Aristotle, gesturing to the earth, walk toward the viewer at the centre, with Pythagoras, Euclid, Ptolemy, Diogenes and dozens of others arranged on the steps around them. Raphael painted the fresco between 1509 and 1511 on a wall of the Stanza della Segnatura, the private library of Pope Julius II, as part of a scheme representing philosophy, theology, poetry and law. The architecture recalls Bramante's designs for the new St Peter's, and several figures are portraits: Leonardo as Plato, Michelangelo as the brooding Heraclitus, Raphael himself at the far right. It is the most complete statement of High Renaissance order and remains in place in the Vatican.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A wide fresco of figures under a coffered vault, best in a study, library or office at 24×16 where the architecture reads from a desk. Black on a warm wall; it suits a room with books and little else hung.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×16. Prints at 18×12, 24×16 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
