Rembrandt at fifty-three, in a dark beret and a plain coat with a turned-up collar, his hands clasped, looks out from the shadow with a lined face lit from the upper left. He painted it in Amsterdam in 1659, a year after his house and collections had been sold at auction to pay his creditors; he was living in reduced circumstances and painting for a small circle of patrons. The pose recalls Raphael's portrait of Baldassare Castiglione, which he had sketched at a sale twenty years earlier, but the handling is his own late manner, with the face built in thick, broken strokes and the clothing barely more than suggested. It is one of around forty painted self-portraits. The canvas came to the National Gallery of Art in Washington with the Mellon collection in 1937.
