A fishing boat heels over on a great wave in a storm, its sail torn, as the disciples haul on ropes, bail, vomit over the side and wake the sleeping Christ, while a shaft of light breaks through the clouds at the upper left. Rembrandt painted the scene from the Gospel of Mark in Amsterdam in 1633, when he was twenty-seven and newly established in the city; it is his only seascape. One figure in a blue cap, clutching a rope and looking straight out at the viewer, is a self-portrait. Isabella Stewart Gardner bought the painting in 1898 for her museum in Boston. On the night of 18 March 1990 it was cut from its frame by thieves posing as police officers, together with twelve other works, and it has not been recovered; its empty frame still hangs in the Dutch Room.
