Dr Nicolaes Tulp, the city anatomist of Amsterdam, lifts the tendons of a dissected forearm with his forceps and explains their action to seven members of the surgeons' guild, who crowd around the pale corpse of an executed criminal, Aris Kindt, on the table. Rembrandt painted the group portrait in 1632, the year after he moved from Leiden to Amsterdam, and it was his first major commission in the city; he was twenty-five. Instead of a row of faces he arranged the surgeons in a pyramid of attention, lit from the left, each reacting to the demonstration. The anatomy of the arm is accurate, though the dissection would in practice have begun with the abdomen. The canvas hung in the guild's anatomy theatre until 1828, when it was bought for the Mauritshuis.
