Schiele, aged twenty-two, tilts his head and looks out with narrowed eyes from a small panel, his dark jacket and white collar rendered in angular strokes, a sprig of orange physalis lanterns curling across the pale background behind him. He painted it in Vienna in 1912, the year he spent twenty-four days in prison at Neulengbach on charges connected to his drawings of adolescents, and it has a companion portrait of his lover and model Wally Neuzil in the same format. Compared with his earlier contorted self-images, the picture is composed and almost tender; the face is drawn with precision and the colour kept to ochre, brown and that one burst of orange. It is the best-known work in the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A small panel in ochre and brown with one burst of orange, best at eye level and close range: a study, reading corner or landing at 16×12 or 24×18 in black. It suits a white or warm grey wall and holds its own without company.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×12. Prints at 16×12, 24×18 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
