The artist's broad head and shoulders fill the board, the face built from slabs of pink, yellow, green and red under dark, knitted brows, with a turquoise collar and a red jacket against a churning ground of blue-green. The colours are unmixed and the strokes heavy, so the face reads almost as a mask. Jawlensky painted it in 1912 in Munich, when he was close to the circle that formed the Blue Rider, though he did not take part in its exhibitions. The intensity of the colour and the frontal stare look ahead to the heads he would paint for the rest of his career, which became more and more schematic until they were reduced to a few lines and colours. It is in the Museum Wiesbaden, in the city where he spent his last two decades.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
