Charles I rides a massive dun horse through a wooded landscape in full tilt armour, a baton of command in his hand and the medallion of the Garter at his neck, while a page at the right offers his helmet and a tablet tied to a tree proclaims him King of Great Britain. At over three and a half metres high it is Van Dyck's largest portrait of the king, painted around 1637 to 1638, five years before the Civil War and a decade before Charles was tried and beheaded. The image borrows the imperial tone of Titian's Charles V on horseback and makes a man of five feet four into a philosopher-king surveying his realm. Van Dyck had been Principal Painter in Ordinary since 1632 and had already painted Charles mounted under a Roman arch with his riding master. The canvas is NG1172 at the National Gallery in London.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
