Venus lies on a bed with her back to the viewer, her brunette head resting on one arm, while Cupid holds up a mirror in which her face appears, softly blurred and larger than it should be. There are no roses, pearls or myrtle, none of the usual trappings, just grey satin, a crimson curtain and skin. Velázquez painted it between 1647 and 1651, probably during his second stay in Italy, and it is his only surviving female nude; the subject was almost unknown in Spain, where the Inquisition frowned on it, though the king's circle collected nudes by Titian and Rubens. It hung in Spanish houses until 1813, then at Rokeby Park in County Durham, which gave it its name, and the National Art Collections Fund bought it for the National Gallery in London in 1906. In 1914 the suffragette Mary Richardson slashed it with a meat cleaver; it was restored, and it is NG2057.
