Morning light floods Yosemite Valley, gilding the mist above the valley floor and the trees along the river while the granite walls catch the first sun. Bierstadt called Yosemite the most magnificent place he had ever been, and after his first visit in 1863 he painted many such views, composed freely from its landmarks rather than copied from a single vantage point. This canvas dates from about 1870. A contemporary critic wrote that the golden valley looked as if it had been painted in an Eldorado, a distant land of gold heard of in song and story, and yet was real. Pictures like this shaped the popular image of Yosemite and fed the sentiment that led to its designation as a national park in 1890, while saying little of the Ahwahnechee people whose home it had been for thousands of years. It is in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth.
