Sharp granite peaks and sunlit clouds rise over a glassy lake and a waterfall, while in the foreground a Shoshone encampment goes about its day among tipis and horses. Bierstadt joined Frederick W. Lander's government survey party in 1859 and reached the Wind River Range of the Rockies, in present-day Wyoming, filling sketchbooks and taking photographs; he painted this canvas, more than three metres wide, in New York in 1863 and showed it at the Tenth Street Studio Building. He had the peak named for Lander after the colonel died in the Civil War. The landscape is composed rather than copied, and the picture presented the West as a frontier awaiting settlement, a vision that left little room for the people in its foreground. It sold in 1865 for 25,000 dollars, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired it in 1907.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
