A plump young man with flushed cheeks, crowned with vine leaves and grapes and wrapped in a sheet, reclines on a couch and offers the viewer a shallow glass of red wine, a carafe and a basket of over-ripe fruit beside him. Caravaggio painted it in Rome around 1596, probably for Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, his first important patron, and it was most likely sent to Florence as a gift to the Medici. The god of wine is a Roman street boy in fancy dress, with dirty fingernails and a sunburnt face, and the fruit is already spotting with decay. A reflection of the painter at his easel has been found in the carafe. The canvas was rediscovered in the Uffizi storerooms in 1913 and has been one of the gallery's attractions since.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
