Judith, a young woman in a white blouse, draws a sword through the neck of the Assyrian general Holofernes, who wakes in his bed and roars as the blood jets out, while her old maidservant waits at the right with a sack to receive the head. A red curtain hangs behind them against a black ground. Caravaggio painted the scene from the Book of Judith in Rome around 1599 to 1602 for the banker Ottavio Costa, and the model for Judith is thought to be the courtesan Fillide Melandroni, who sat for him in other pictures. Her frown of distaste and the servant's grim concentration are drawn from life rather than from convention. The painting was rediscovered in 1950 and bought for the Italian state; it is in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome.
