Christ and Saint Peter step into a bare room from the right, and Christ's outstretched hand points at a group of men counting coins at a table; a beam of light from a high window follows the gesture and falls on the bearded tax collector Matthew, who points at himself in surprise while the young men beside him in plumed hats and striped sleeves look up. Caravaggio painted it in 1599 and 1600 for the Contarelli Chapel in the French church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome, his first public commission, as a pendant to The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew. He dressed the tax collectors in contemporary Roman fashion and set the Gospel scene in a tavern-like interior lit from one side. The canvas is still in the chapel for which it was painted.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
