Hunters on rearing horses and on foot close in on lions in a rocky North African landscape, the whole a tangle of claws, blades, flying manes and billowing robes painted in slashing strokes of red and green, blue and orange. Delacroix had travelled to Morocco and Algeria in 1832, a journey that fed his work for the rest of his life, but he never saw a lion hunt; he built such scenes from studies of zoo animals, North African costume and the hunting pictures of Rubens. He returned to the subject repeatedly from 1855, when he painted a monumental version now in Bordeaux. This canvas, signed and dated 1861, is one of the last. It came to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922 with the Potter Palmer Collection and hangs in the European painting galleries.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
