Three women in loose, richly embroidered garments and gold jewellery sit in an enclosed, lavishly decorated room, one with a pink flower in her hair, while a fourth, a Black servant, turns to leave at the right. Delacroix drew on his North African journey of 1832, which ended in Algiers, and painted the picture in Paris in 1834. He showed it at that year's Salon, where it drew mixed reviews, and King Louis-Philippe bought it for the Musée du Luxembourg; it moved to the Louvre in 1874. A second, warmer version followed in 1849 and is in Montpellier. Few paintings have had such a long afterlife among painters: Van Gogh and Gauguin travelled to see the Montpellier version in 1888, Cézanne spoke of its colour entering the eye like wine, and Picasso made fifteen variations on it in 1954.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 32×24. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
