Blindfolded and dressed in white satin, the sixteen-year-old Lady Jane Grey, queen of England for nine days in 1553, feels for the block with the help of Sir John Brydges, the Lieutenant of the Tower, while the executioner waits with his axe and her ladies collapse against the pillar. Delaroche set the scene in a shadowy interior rather than on Tower Green, where it happened, and painted it with a theatrical precision that made it the sensation of the Paris Salon of 1834. It was given to the National Gallery in 1902, written off as destroyed in the Thames flood of 1928 and rediscovered rolled up in the stores in 1973; since its return to display in 1975 it has been one of the gallery's most popular pictures.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
