Outside a teahouse at the left, a man stripped to the waist rests on a bench beside a saddled horse. In the road, bearers in short coats set down a palanquin whose passenger holds a fan, a man bows, and a stone road marker stands under a pine at the right; behind, a raised embankment lined with trees runs toward blue hills and white cloud. This is print nine of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi), c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Kumagai was the eighth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto, and the title names its Hatchō embankment; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
