A Tahitian Mary carries the child Jesus on her shoulder while two women in flowered pareus press their palms together in greeting and an angel with yellow wings watches from behind the trees; the title, painted in the lower corner, is Tahitian for Hail Mary. Gauguin made it in 1891, his first major canvas after arriving in Tahiti, and described it to a friend in March 1892 as a somber, mountainous scene with flowering trees, a dark violet path, an emerald foreground and bananas at the left. He based the poses of the greeting women on a photograph he owned of a relief from the Javanese temple of Borobudur. It is the only explicitly Christian picture from his first Tahitian stay, and it set the pattern of fusing European religious imagery with Polynesian figures and colour. Sam A. Lewisohn bequeathed it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1951.
