Breton women in white coifs and black dresses, fresh from a sermon, bow their heads while Jacob wrestles the angel on a field of blazing red before them. Gauguin painted it at Pont-Aven in the summer of 1888 and wrote to Van Gogh that for him the landscape and the fight existed only in the imagination of the people praying. The diagonal tree trunk divides the real from the visionary, the ground is vermilion rather than green, and the figures are drawn with heavy contours and flat colour learned from Japanese prints and worked out with his young friend Émile Bernard. It was a decisive break from Impressionism toward an art of ideas, and it became the founding picture of the style called Synthetism. The painting belongs to the National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh.
