A tall column of grey smoke rises from a tile kiln on the near bank and drifts up the whole height of the sheet, while ferry boats cross the wide Sumida River and ducks swim in the shallows. On the far side, green woods and roofs stretch to a distant mountain under a red horizon. The print is number thirty-seven in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the fourth month of 1857. The kilns at Hashiba made roof tiles, and the Hashiba ferry crossed the river there. The soft smoke is printed in graded grey against a pale sky; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Soft grey smoke over pale river blue and green banks, for a study, home office or reading corner at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with The Ferry at Sakasai for two river crossings.
