Snow covers the steep peaks of a mountain pass, the white slopes picked out with dark green trees. Down in the brown cut of the road, a porter with a box on a pole and a bundle walks forward, a figure sits resting nearby and a man in a yellow hat stands at the right, while two more travellers climb toward a pink glow at the horizon. This is print twenty-nine of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Kinjudō (Iseya Rihei), c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Wada was the twenty-eighth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
