A wide avenue runs past a large merchant's building at the right, its blue-tiled roof and shopfront curtains in red and indigo with white crests, while a party of women under matching red-and-white umbrellas files along the street at the left. Porters and passers-by fill the road, and the trees of Ueno hill rise at the end of the view under a pink evening sky. The print is number thirteen in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the ninth month of 1856. Hirokōji means broad street: these wide roads were cleared in Edo as firebreaks and became busy places for trade. The repeated umbrellas and crests make a bright pattern against the grey road; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
