A sudden storm drives across a hillside: rain falls in sharp slanting lines, bamboo groves bend in grey silhouette, and travellers in straw capes hurry up and down the slope, two bearers running with a palanquin. One man clutches an umbrella against the wind, and on it can be read the publisher's name and the series title. The print is number forty-six in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Shōno, the forty-fifth station, was a small post town between Ishiyakushi and Kameyama, and Hiroshige builds the storm from layers of grey in graded tones, with the rain cut as fine lines; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
