Branches of double cherry blossom hang from the top of the sheet in large pink flowers, framed by a dark tree trunk at the right, and below them lies a calm view across the Sumida River to a distant mountain. In the middle ground, the woods of the Suijin shrine stand on the far bank with a torii gate, and small figures walk along a path in the foreground. The print is number thirty-five in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the eighth month of 1856. The shrine to Suijin, the water deity, stood on the river near Massaki. Hiroshige sets the close-up blossoms against the distant landscape, a pairing of near and far that recurs throughout the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
