Travellers on a narrow cliff path at the upper left lean out to look past twisted pines at the view below: the deep blue water of Suruga Bay, white sails out at sea, and a snow-white Mount Fuji rising over the far shore. The rock face beside them falls away in steep bands of blue, green and red. The print is number seventeen in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Beyond Yui, the sixteenth station, the road ran over the Satta Pass, a narrow way along the cliffs above the sea, and its view of Fuji across the bay was well known; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Deep sea blue, a white Fuji and cliffs in red and teal, for a living room, study or office at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Hokusai's Tago Bay near Ejiri on the Tōkaidō for two views across Suruga Bay toward Fuji.
