Two large torii gates stand in the shallow water of Noboto Bay at low tide, while people gather shellfish around their legs, bending and carrying baskets. The shore rises to green hills at the right, and a tiny Fuji shows on the distant horizon. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). The torii marked the approach to a shrine on the coast of Shimōsa province, across the bay from Edo. Hokusai frames the distant mountain between the uprights of the gates; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
