A broad mirrored pattern of rose-pink and coral flowers, honeysuckle, tulip-like blooms and hanging fritillaries, spreads across a grey-blue ground with silvery green leaves and twisting stems. William Morris designed Honeysuckle in 1876; his daughter May called it the most mysterious and poetic of his patterns, 'the very symbol of a garden tangle'. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that the repeat is unusually broad, spanning almost the whole width of the loom, in line with Morris's belief that large patterns were more restful to the eye than small ones, even in modest rooms. Its native English flowers reflect his delight in the garden at Kelmscott Manor. This early twentieth-century printing on linen is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole sample beneath original typography set in-house. The design is in the public domain.
