A woman seen from the side, irises in her hair, turns toward the viewer with an armful of grapes, pears, apples and soft fruits, in a panel framed by a decorative border. Mucha designed Fruit in Paris in 1897 for the printer F. Champenois, who issued it as a colour lithograph together with a companion panel, Flower, in the same format. It belongs to the first years of his exclusive contract with Champenois, when the success of The Seasons had shown that decorative panels sold without advertising text could be a business in their own right. The abundance of the harvest and the figure's half-turned pose are typical of his work of the period, as is the combination of a naturalistic head with flattened, patterned drapery. The pair was reissued in several sizes.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
