A woman in pale drapery turns her face toward a star low in the sky at the edge of dawn, her hair streaming, in a tall narrow panel with a thin decorative border. Mucha designed it in Paris in 1902 as one of The Moon and the Stars, a set of four decorative panels, The Moon, the Evening Star, the Pole Star and the Morning Star, printed as colour lithographs by F. Champenois. The Morning Star is the brightest and most hopeful of the four, its figure lit from below as the night ends. The set is quieter in colour and more atmospheric than his earlier Seasons and Flowers, with the figures emerging from darkness rather than framed by ornament. It was one of the last decorative series he made before leaving Paris for Prague and his Slav subjects.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
