Four tall panels, each with a woman seated above a realistically drawn flower whose colour matches a gemstone: Topaz in golden robes above an honesty plant, Ruby with cherries in her hair holding a pendant above red blooms, Amethyst lifting her hair above dark pink irises, and Emerald with a green snake in her dark red hair above green foliage. Mucha designed the set in Paris in 1900, the year of the Exposition Universelle, and F. Champenois printed it as colour lithographs for framing. The figures occupy the upper part of each panel on a mosaic halo, and the robes, hair ornaments and even the eyes are keyed to the stone's hue. It was one of the last of his great Paris decorative series before he turned toward the Slav subjects of his later career.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
