A woman with a wreath of flowers in her auburn hair sits with a pattern book open on her lap, turning a page and looking out at the viewer, framed by a circular halo of ornament and a border of stylised blossoms. Mucha designed it in Paris in 1897 for his printer F. Champenois, whose name appears on the original as the firm's calendar for 1898; the design was then reissued without text as a decorative panel under the title Rêverie, or Daydream. It belongs to the first years of his exclusive contract with Champenois, when his posters for Sarah Bernhardt had made him the most sought-after graphic artist in the city. The impression reproduced here, with the printer's lettering, is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
