A nude young woman with a great fall of golden hair, half draped in white, holds a paintbrush in one hand and a quill in the other, framed by lettering announcing the twentieth exhibition of the Salon des Cent. The Salon was the gallery of the art magazine La Plume, which sold lithographs by its contributors, among them Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard, Ensor and Grasset. Mucha designed the poster in Paris in 1896, and it was printed by F. Champenois. It is the work in which the curving lines, pale tones, flat colour and strong outlines that define his mature style first appear together, and it won him the respect of the avant-garde as well as the public. The impression reproduced here is in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
