A fair-haired young woman in a white gown stands among blossoming branches, stringing a lyre made of a bent bough while small birds gather to listen, in a tall panel with a slim decorative border. Spring is the first of The Seasons, the set of four panels Mucha designed in Paris in 1896 and F. Champenois printed as colour lithographs for framing; it was his first decorative series and one of his most popular, so much so that he produced further Seasons sets in 1897 and 1900. Personifications of the seasons were an old convention, but Mucha gave them a new intimacy, each figure absorbed in her own landscape rather than posed with attributes. The impression reproduced here is from the set held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
