A woman wrapped in a pale hooded cloak stands among snow-laden branches, warming a small bird in her cupped hands while others perch nearby, the whole panel kept to whites, greys and a cold blue. Winter closes The Seasons, the four decorative panels Mucha designed in Paris in 1896 and F. Champenois printed as colour lithographs, his first series of panels made for framing rather than advertising. The frosty palette and the figure's protective gesture give the set its quietest image. The series was so popular that Mucha produced new Seasons in 1897 and 1900, and the formula of a woman embodying a natural theme became the basis of his decorative work. The impression reproduced here is from the set in the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
