A woman turns on tiptoe within a decorative halo, her gown and her great sweep of hair caught by the wind along with a scatter of falling leaves, so that the whole figure seems to spin. Mucha designed Dance in Paris in 1898 as one of The Arts, a set of four decorative panels printed as colour lithographs by F. Champenois; the others are Painting, Poetry and Music. He avoided the usual emblems of the arts and instead gave each a woman and a moment in nature: Dance is the movement of the autumn wind, as Music is birdsong at night and Poetry the evening star. The circular halo filled with ornament, borrowed from Byzantine icons, had become his signature. The Arts was among the most popular of his series and was reissued in several formats.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
