The Flowers

A dark-haired woman in a pink gown holds a single carnation to her face, with pink, white and yellow carnations massed at her feet in a tall, narrow panel. Mucha designed The Flowers in Paris in 1898 for the printer F. Champenois, who issued the four designs, Rose, Iris, Carnation and Lily, as colour lithographs for framing. Each flower is matched to a woman whose colouring and bearing suggest its character: the carnation, warm and spicy, is given the darkest hair and the richest colour of the set. The panels are more naturalistic than his posters, with the plants drawn from life and the ornament kept to a slim border. The series sold out fast enough that Champenois printed a reduced version with all four on one sheet, and it has remained in print for over a century.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is The Flowers: Carnation in the public domain?
Yes. Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Mucha Trust / private collections; impressions in public collections.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was The Flowers: Carnation painted, and in what medium?
The Flowers: Carnation dates from 1898 and was made in colour lithograph.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
