A woman swathed in dark drapery stands against the pale disc of the moon in a tall, narrow panel, her hands raised to her face, with a starry sky above and a hint of distant water below. Mucha designed The Moon and the Stars in Paris in 1902 as a set of four decorative panels, The Moon, the Evening Star, the Pole Star and the Morning Star, printed as colour lithographs by F. Champenois. The series is more mysterious and restrained in colour than his earlier Seasons and Flowers, with the figures almost dissolving into night. The impression reproduced here is from the set in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, which holds the panels together with the printed cover under which they were sold. It was among the last of his Paris decorative series.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
