A man in a gold sleeve lays his hand gently on the breast of a woman in a red dress, who covers it with her own, the two of them standing close together against a dark ground in an attitude of quiet tenderness. Rembrandt painted it in Amsterdam in the last years of his life, around 1665 to 1669. The title is a nineteenth-century guess; the couple are now usually thought to be Isaac and Rebecca from the Book of Genesis, perhaps as portraits of a real husband and wife in biblical costume. The gold of the sleeve is laid on with a palette knife in thick ridges that catch the light, among the freest passages of paint in his work. Van Gogh wrote that he would give ten years of his life to sit before it for a fortnight. It is in the Rijksmuseum.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
