An old man in a red cloak bends over his kneeling son, who has come home in rags with his head shaved and one shoe worn through, and rests both hands on the young man's back while figures in the shadow, including an elder brother standing stiffly at the right, look on. Rembrandt painted the parable from the Gospel of Luke in Amsterdam in the last years of his life, and it is among the largest and last of his religious pictures. The faces are barely detailed; the meaning is carried by the father's hands, one broad and masculine, the other slender, and by the light that falls on the two figures alone. Catherine the Great bought it for the Hermitage in 1766, and it has been in St Petersburg ever since.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
