A terracotta vase carved with an antique relief overflows with flowers from every season of the year, roses, anemones, hyacinths and tulips among them, built into a loose pyramid that seems about to burst its container. Butterflies and insects crawl among the stems and drops of water stand on the leaves. Jan van Huysum painted it in 1722, working from life and waiting for each flower to come into season, which is why some of his bouquets took years to finish; the brilliance comes from layer upon layer of thin oil glazes on the panel. He painted it as the companion to the Fruit Piece of the same year, and the two have stayed together, passing through the Van Winter collection in Amsterdam and Alfred de Rothschild's in London before the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles acquired both in 1982. It is among the best-known Dutch flower pieces in America.
