Seen from above, a frozen river outside a village teems with some two hundred figures: skaters, kolf players, strollers in their best clothes, a horse-drawn sledge, fishermen trying to free a boat from the ice, and in the left foreground crows and a dog at the carcass of a horse that froze to death. Avercamp painted it on an oak panel around 1608, after the savage winter of 1607 to 1608, and it is among the earliest works by the first Dutch painter to specialise in winter. The debt to Pieter Bruegel is plain, down to the wooden bird trap, and Avercamp signed the panel as graffiti scrawled on the wall of a wooden shed at the right. Hendrick Avercamp, who was deaf and mute, worked in Kampen for most of his life. The Rijksmuseum bought the painting in 1897 with the support of the Vereniging Rembrandt.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters in the public domain?
Yes. Hendrick Avercamp (1585–1634) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Rijksmuseum.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters painted, and in what medium?
Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters dates from c. 1608 and was made in oil on panel; the original measures 77.3 × 131.9 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
