A young woman stands at a virginal with her back to the viewer, her face visible only in the mirror above the instrument, while a gentleman beside her listens, or perhaps sings. A bass viol lies on the tiled floor, a white jug sits on the carpeted table, and the inscription on the virginal's lid speaks of music as the companion of joy and the medicine of sorrow. Vermeer painted it around 1662 to 1665, and it was among the pictures still in his house when he died in 1675. The Venetian painter Pellegrini acquired it in 1718, it passed to the collector Joseph Smith, and George III bought Smith's collection in 1762; it has been in the Royal Collection ever since, though it was catalogued as a Frans van Mieris until Thoré identified Vermeer's hand in 1866. It is usually shown in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace.

This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The exhibition-poster edition sets the complete image above typography designed in-house.
Is The Music Lesson (Lady at the Virginals with a Gentleman) in the public domain?
Yes. Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Royal Collection Trust.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was The Music Lesson (Lady at the Virginals with a Gentleman) painted, and in what medium?
The Music Lesson (Lady at the Virginals with a Gentleman) dates from c. 1662–1665 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 74.1 × 64.6 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
