About Thomas Wilmer Dewing
Thomas Wilmer Dewing was born in Boston in May 1851, worked as a lithographer, and studied at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1876. Settling in New York in 1880, he found his single subject: slender women in long gowns, reading, playing a spinet or standing in a green meadow, painted in a mist of close tones with almost nothing else in the picture. The collectors Charles Lang Freer and John Gellatly bought most of what he made; Stanford White designed his frames; and he summered at the Cornish colony in New Hampshire. A founder of the Ten American Painters in 1898, he painted little after 1920 and died in New York in November 1938. His hushed green-and-grey figures print as the most restful pictures in American art, suited to a bedroom or a quiet sitting room.
