About Dudley Hardy
Dudley Hardy was born in Sheffield in 1867, the son of the marine painter Thomas Bush Hardy, and trained in Düsseldorf, Antwerp and Paris before settling in London. He painted street scenes and Breton and Dutch subjects for the exhibitions, but his living came from illustration and above all from posters for the London theatres and magazines in the 1890s. His poster for the musical comedy A Gaiety Girl, a single white-clad dancer on a flat red ground, and his girls for Jerome K. Jerome's weekly To-Day brought the Parisian poster style of Chéret to the London hoardings, and two of his designs were chosen for Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. He was a founder member of the London Sketch Club. He died in London in 1922.
