About Gilbert Stuart
Gilbert Stuart was born in Rhode Island in December 1755, trained in London under Benjamin West from 1777, and made a brilliant career there and in Dublin with portraits painted in a fluent, high-coloured manner learned from Reynolds and Gainsborough, The Skater of 1782 among them. Always in debt, he returned to America in 1793 with the declared aim of painting George Washington, and did so in 1795 and 1796: the unfinished Athenaeum head, which he kept and copied more than seventy times, is the face on the dollar bill, and the full-length Lansdowne portrait hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. He painted the first six presidents and nearly a thousand sitters in all, settling in Boston in 1805, where he died in July 1828. His portraits, direct and unflattered, print as classic American images for a study, office or hallway.
