Catherine Yates, the wife of a New York merchant, looks sideways at the viewer as she sews, in a white satin dress and an elaborate white cap. Stuart painted her soon after his return to America in 1793, and the shrewd, lively face and brilliant whites make it one of his best portraits. It is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — dark wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
