About Henri Meunier

Henri Meunier was born in Ixelles, Brussels, in July 1873, the son of the engraver Jean-Baptiste Meunier and a nephew of the sculptor Constantin Meunier, studied at the Brussels academy and worked as an etcher, bookbinder and illustrator. His posters of the 1890s, for the Concerts Ysaÿe at the Cirque Royal in 1895, the Casino de Blankenberghe, the Starlight soap and above all the Rajah coffee of 1897, a woman in profile with a cup and a single curling line of steam on a flat brown ground, were praised in Paris as the most economical designs of the Belgian Art Nouveau; L'Estampe et l'Affiche called Rajah a masterpiece, and it was reproduced in Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. He showed with the Brussels groups Pour l'Art and L'Estampe, made etchings and colour prints of the Belgian coast and bookplates, and died in Brussels in September 1922.
