About Theodore Robinson
Theodore Robinson was born in Vermont in 1852, grew up in Wisconsin and studied in Chicago, New York and Paris, where he worked under Carolus-Duran and Gérôme. Asthmatic all his life, he was the first American painter to settle at Giverny, in 1887, and became a close friend of Claude Monet, whose example turned his careful realism into a bright, structured Impressionism of French village lanes, canals and figures in sunlight. He returned to the United States for good in 1892 and painted Connecticut harbours and New York canals in the same manner, working from photographs as well as nature. He died of an asthma attack in New York in April 1896, aged forty-three, just as his work was gaining notice. His sunlit Giverny pictures print as fresh, airy colour for a bedroom, kitchen or hallway.
