About John Henry Twachtman
John Henry Twachtman was born in Cincinnati in August 1853, studied with Frank Duveneck and in Munich, and then in Paris at the Académie Julian, where the silvery tonal landscapes of Arques-la-Bataille were painted in 1885. In 1889 he bought a farm at Greenwich, Connecticut, and for the rest of his life painted its brook, pool, hemlocks and white bridge in snow, mist and spring, in a high-keyed, near-abstract manner that was the most radical of any American Impressionist. A founder of the Ten American Painters and a teacher at the Art Students League, he sold little in his lifetime and died at Gloucester, Massachusetts, in August 1902, aged forty-nine. His winter landscapes, almost all white on white, print as quiet, meditative pictures for a bedroom or study.
