A large copper-red rose and golden lilies sit within a lattice of olive-gold rose branches and leaves on a deep navy ground, the silk catching the light across the woven surface. Rose and Lily was designed in 1893 by John Henry Dearle, who was responsible for the new woven textiles of William Morris's firm from 1888 and produced 38 repeating patterns for the loom. The V&A notes that it is directly influenced by an early seventeenth-century Italian fabric in its own collection, showing how Morris, an adviser to the South Kensington Museum, passed his study of historical textiles on to his assistant. It is woven in silk and wool. This length was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1923.

This print fills the sheet edge to edge with the pattern, cropped from a high-resolution museum scan of the original, so it reads like a panel of the wallpaper or fabric. The exhibition poster shows the whole sample. The design is in the public domain.

Where it works

A copper rose and gold lilies on deep navy bring a formal, jewel-like note to a dining room, hallway or dark study. Pair it with Violet and Columbine (Navy) at 16×24 in black.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.

Framing. Printed edge to edge: a slim black or natural wood frame right to the pattern, or let the canvas wrap do the framing. Also available gallery-wrapped on canvas, ready to hang with no frame.

Is this the whole design, or a crop?
A crop: the print fills the sheet edge to edge with the repeating pattern, the way it runs across a wall, taken from a museum scan of the original. To see the whole sample, choose the exhibition poster.
Is Rose and Lily in the public domain?
Yes. John Henry Dearle (1860–1932) died more than 70 years ago and the design dates from before 1931, so it is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of an original held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18 and 16×24 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. It is also available gallery-wrapped on canvas. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Rose and Lily designed?
John Henry Dearle designed Rose and Lily in 1893; this sample is woven silk and wool.
What size should I choose?
For Rose and Lily we'd choose 16×24. Patterns also hang well as a pair or a row of three colourways at the same size.
